Is It Over Yet?

As a rule I don't delve into politics on my blog. I vote religiously if not always enthusiastically. I can't be the only one who thinks this election has gone on far too long?

In any event, if I ruled the world I would shorten the election season. Nine months for the presidency, three months for all other seats.

Term limits. Frankly I think one and done would be good. Our forefathers wanted every citizen to participate in government, not to make a career out of it. The one and done rule would certainly take a bite out of lobbyists.

Both houses should run on a simple majority. Folks who's sole purpose is to obstruct should be removed from office as they are not doing the peoples business. We send you to congress to negotiate for the betterment of your state and your country not bring it to it's knees with a stance so rigid nothing can be accomplished. Most of us don't expect 100% of all we want. We expect compromise, we expect YOU to respect each other as you negotiate that compromise and so we are clear here, we expect you TO compromise. Not go sit in the corner like a spoiled 8 year old who isn't getting their own way.

Life is not fair, we get that, we also get that there should be a middle ground on everything. All or nothing does not belong in a democracy. Not ever. Religion doesn't either. There are many other houses for your beliefs. The houses of Government are not one of them.

Whoever wins has earned the right to surround themselves with a cabinet of their choosing. Period.
That goes for Supreme Court appointments too. To whoever lost, you lost. Pull up your big person panties and make the best of it through COMPROMISE, not obstruction.

I have no clue how to make the candidates kinder and gentler with each other and it saddens me deeply.  Maybe they should sit down with each other once a week, away from the trail, the cameras and the traveling freak show that is American politics and break bread.  Have a meal, a real dinner table discussion and end it all with a good cup of coffee and generous dessert.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence

and Ms. Clinton and Mr. Kaine,

you are all welcome at my table. We have just enough chairs to go around......        .
DON'T NOT VOTE!

I love this post! Yay to clear suggestions for change. Who knows if they'd work, but it's a definite that our current system isn't working. In fact, calling it a system gives it more legitimacy than it has.

You'll get my vote, Theresa!

Ditto!!!!
I can't wait for this to be over and I'm scared to death about a possible bad outcome (in my opinion) for the first time in my voting life - it's just too up in the air for my liking.

AMEN!! I'm so looking forward to something else being in the news and hopefully the childish name calling will cease after the elections, no matter how they turn out.

We the people keep electing them. I wonder about that?

I agree with you on everything but the term limits. We have term limits in the Michigan Legislature. Instead of new ideas and fresh blood, there is rolling nepotism as family members step in to run for a seat vacated by a spouse or parent. It has also given more power to lobbyists because legislatures come in to office not understanding the process. Instead of dealing with the firehose of imformation, they turn to lobbyists for the cliff notes version. And of course, more people through the legistlative pipeline creates more lobbyists.

You have voiced my thoughts so well!!! I have decided to start writing my elected officials instead of just whining about my disappointments....I don't know if it will make a difference, but at least I'll feel like they might hear my voice. Just a week to go.....I early voted!!!

Your political system is so different to ours except sadly one thing , politicians being downright nasty to each other. Australians are also fed up and just want out pollies to govern as they were elected to so. One thing is sure I love your little dog Jack and his sticky out tooth. My little dog is having his teeth cleaned and a lump checked out tomorrow. I know he is going to be a groggy doggy tomorrow and the next couple of days. Hope the election can be conducted with dignity and respect from now on. Janine.

So true! When did compromise become a dirty word?

Theresa said...

Martha, No clue, but it really should come back into fashion.

Janine, I fear this election is far to gone to be civil again and I'm hoping it hasn't set the bar for the next one. Yikes!!!

LA, I turned my ballot around within 24 hours of receiving it. Oregon votes by mail.

Valerie, Great links. Seriously though, there must be some way we can come up with to greatly hinder lobbyists and move career politicians out. I mean all they seem to do is worry about keeping their jobs instead of actually voting on things and showing some spine.

Anna, Good to hear from you!

Martha TRW, Jack would be honored, although I think he would make a better VP. His platform of course is a chicken (without bones) in every bowl.

ASG, We select them because that is all that is offered. Our system has made it almost impossible for anyone without a lot of money to run for most offices and who would want to open their lives up to the scrutiny of being a candidate? And lets look at what the voters put forth from a large field of candidates on the Republican side. It's a symbiotic relationship. You get what you vote for.

Judy, This whole season has kind of been like a train wreck. You don't want to look but you just can't help it.

Cindie, Me too.

Peg, Well, thank you. I still think we have a system although in recent days I'm utterly dismayed that the FBI has in essence rigged/swayed our election with innuendo.

Noreen, Thank you and welcome! We'll get back to the weaving, sewing and critter wrangling next week. :-)
